In Quebec there are 12 possible classes. For example, class 1 allows a person to drive a heavy vehicle and encompasses all the other classes except those of motorcycle driving. Class 5 authorizes a person to drive a passenger vehicle and class 6A a two-wheel motorized vehicle.
A truck covered by Class 3 hauling any trailer or semi-trailer other than those described above, with a net weight of 2,000 kg or more (Class 1 includes classes 2, 3, 4A, 4B, 4C, 5, 6D and 8). The permit for Class 1 cannot be changed without an examination (see obtaining a permit).
A Class 2 licence authorizes its holder to drive a bus designed to transport more than 24 passengers (Class 2 includes classes 3, 4A, 4B, 4C, 5, 6D and 8). The permit for Class 2 cannot be changed without an examination (see obtaining a permit).
A Class 3 licence authorizes its holder to drive a twin-axle truck with a net weight of 4,500 kg or more, with 3 or more axles, hauling a trailer or semi-trailer with a net weight of at least 2,000 kg but less than 4,500 kg (Class 3 includes classes 4A, 4B, 4C, 5, 6D and 8). The permit for Class 3 cannot be changed without an examination (see obtaining a permit).
A Class 4A licence authorizes its holder to drive: an ambulance, a police vehicle, a fire department vehicle (Class 4 A includes classes 4B, 4C, 5, 6D and 8). The permit for Class 4A cannot be changed without an examination (see obtaining a permit).
A bus that has the capacity to transport 24 passengers or less. (Class 4 B includes classes 4C, 5, 6D and 8). The permit for Class 4B cannot be changed without an examination (see obtaining a permit).
Class 4 B includes classes 4C, 5, 6D and 8). The permit for Class 4C cannot be changed without an examination (see obtaining a permit).
A Class 5 licence authorizes its holder to drive: an automobile, that is, a vehicle having 2 axles and a net weight of less than 4,500 kg, a motor, also known as a recreational vehicle (RV), a tool vehicle, such as a grader or loader, a service vehicle, such as a tow truck. (Class 5 includes classes 6D and 8). The permit for Class 5 cannot be changed without an examination (see obtaining a permit).

A motorcycle with a cylinder capacity of 400 cc or less. (Class 6B includes classes 6C, 6D and 8). The permit for Class 6B cannot be changed without an examination (see obtaining a permit).
A motorcycle with a cylinder capacity of 125 cc or less. (Class 6C includes classes 6D and 8). The permit for Class 6C cannot be changed without an examination (see obtaining a permit).
A Class 6D permit only authorizes its holder to drive a vehicle equipped with an electric motor or a motor having a cylinder capacity of not more than 50 cc with an automatic transmission and having a maximum speed of 70 km/h.
A Class 8 licence only authorizes its holder to drive: a tractor used for farm-related purposes
All vehicles (including motorcycles) must be registered. In order to do so, when a new vehicle is purchased, one must go to a SAAQ service center.
The registration of a passenger vehicle used for your personal needs is renewed each year at the same period. The first letter of your last name determines the month in which your vehicle is renewed.

Other than the rare exception, the owners of any vehicle travelling in Québec must be covered by a third-party civil liability insurance policy of at least $50,000 contracted from a private insurance company.
